we are take you to the accident scene for an update on the traffic. black smoke. cardinals electing a new pope just sent a message to the world. a disturbing threat at a bay area high school. how police are responding. we're tracking dense fog this morning coming up where the fog is right few and the neighborhoods that will hit the 80s this afternoon. good morning, to you welcome to a brand new day, wednesday, middle of the week march 13th pam cook is back.

good morning, i'm dave clark. >> good morning, i'm pam cook. thank you for joining us. mark tamayo is in for steve. i hear it's going to be warm. >> yeah a few neighborhoods approaching the 80-degree mark. get ready. you might be thieving a bit for the allergy suffering. at least for the morning watch out for thick pockets of fog and into the afternoon hours clearing back to near the shoreline. there is the eventual temperature range. 62-80 degrees. more on your forecast highs in a few minutes. sal has an update on traffic. we are looking at highway 4. one of the areas of the bay that doesn't have a lot of fog. but a lot of other areas do. that means if you are driving you probably will run into fog to just give yourself plenty of extra time. the traffic is going to be effected in many areas because of the thick fog. san mateo bridge traffic does look good heading off to the high-rise on westbound 92. you can see the high-rise from

here. the fog is not all that bad. a fatal crash has shut down part of highway 101 this morning. the chp closed one northbound lane. after a pickup truck went off the road at about 2:15 this morning. four people were in the pickup truck. the woman driving the truck was ejected and died at the scene. ambulances took the other three to hospitals with major injuries. no word on when the lane will reopen northbound. i want to mention our reporter tara moriarty is there. she'll have more from the scene coming up. now back to the desk. all right, thank you, sal. happening right now 1:00 in the afternoon at vatican city. thousands of people have been gathering at st. peters square despite the weather conditions there. there is a live picture from the drizzly and cold vatican this morning. but less than 90 minutes ago black smoke came from the six foot high copper chimney of the sistine chapel. none of the 115 cardinals

received the two-thirds majority or 77 votes to become the next pope. the cardinals voted twice and once last night. but so far have been unable to pick a successor to pope benedict. >> it's like a board of directors getting together. you don't put cameras in when the board of directors is making tough decisions. >> the cardinals are now resuming prayers and deliberations. they will hold another round or two of voting later today and we should see smoke by noon pacific time. if no pope is chosen by saturday the cardinals will break for a day of prayer and reflection. conclaves elect the pope by the fifth day. the last time they dragged out to five days was back in 1831 that is when the process took 83 ballots and 50 days before a pope was named. stay with ktvu news throughout the day for an update. if there is breaking news we'll bring it to you live.

we'll also have a live report from italy in our next half hour. and you can find updates at ktvu.com and on our mobile ktvu app. back here at home foothill high school in pleasanton is on alert this morning. a threatening message was found in one of the bathrooms. claudine wong is at the campus to tell us what was said in that message and how the school officials are responding. >> reporter: we do expect it to be a different kind of day at foothill high school and for the rest of the week. take a look at the campus certainly quiet. police have been notified about this threat and we are expecting an increased police presence today. parents also not an e-mail and phone call about the situation. all of this after threatening graffiti was found in one of the girl's bathrooms. this photo posted on the pleasanton patch this morning. we have blurred the expletive. as you can see it says i hate everyone at the school. watch me shoot everyone on march 14th. i swear to god. the principal sent out an e-

mail explaning the discovery yesterday. letting parents know they are working with police and trying to reassure families that the school is safe and secure. the e-mail says additional precautions are being taken like the extra police presence and all of that will be in place for the remainder of the week. online we have seen varied reactions from people. some kids posted they will not be going to school tomorrow. we put in calls to pleasanton pd and hoping to talk to someone at the school. we will stay on on of this story and keep you updated. time now 5:05. police in berkeley said they made no arrests after a march protesting the death of a transgender person during a

clash with police. this is last night about 75 demonstrators some of them wearing bandannas and masks marched to the berkeley police headquarters. as that person was described as a 347-pound schizophrenic who died from some violent reaction during the police confrontation. >> details of the incident has not been released. this is an accountability. >> we do understand the communities desire to want information regarding the investigation. it is still ongoing. >> demonstrators is -- some of the protestors rushed one of our ktvu news cameras. today is day two of president obama's charm offensive on capitol hill. yesterday the president met behind closed doors with senate

democrats. today and tomorrow he has meetings with republicans. how's gop republican paul ryan has challenged the president to come up with a balanced spending plan. >> my goal is not to chase a balanced budget just for the sake of balance, my goal is how do we grow the economy, put people back to work? and if we do that we are going to be bringing in more revenue. >> patty murray will unvail the democrats budget plan and the white house says president obama will release his budget the week of april 8th. also today president obama will meet with ceo's from major companies to get their input on how the government and private sector can best work together to improve cyber security. coming up why the director of national intelligence says cyber attacks now pose more of a threat to the u.s. than a terrorist attack. time now 5:07. let's check in with sal. already we are following fog and crashes a busy morning.

>> it is busy already. pam, welcome back. the traffic is moving along pretty well if you are driving in many areas. but it's foggy. i can show you the east shore freeway. if you look at the screen you can see is cars moving through. very thick fog. when you two to the toll plaza just a little bit away you can see fog here. not a lot of traffic yet. but mark and i will be the fog brothers this morning. talking about the fog and mark will be moving around. this is a look at the livermore to castro valley commute. that traffic looks good on the road commute. this morning if you are driving in san jose in the south bay we've had a couple minor fender benders that have been off to the shoulder. i do want to mention the crash we've been covering in the north bay on northbound 101 on the way up to petaluma this is a crash that is blocking one lane up at the marin-sonoma county line. it's a fatal crash. southbound 101 may be effected because of people looking at

the crash. let's go to mark. hi there, sal. good morning, to you. this is a dangerous type of fog where we could have clear skies and then you encounter that fog bank and in an instant drop off visibility. but into the afternoon hours very warm numbers inland. tomorrow a little bit cooler. the weekend still dry but a little bit cooler as well. current temperatures are in the 40s. a few upper 30s up toward novato and napa. hayward checking in 47. the fog a big factor coast side and up in the north bay. santa rosa visibility there three quarter of a mile. latest observation at oakland 1/8 of a mile. the fog still hugging parts of the shoreline. extending out toward berkeley and richmond. in the afternoon hours we will warm things up. that will translate to a few spots approaching the 80-degree

mark this afternoon. the cooler end of the temperature range right near the immediate shoreline. there's our forecast model in the short term show you the dense fog between now and 10:00. and then into the afternoon hours still picking up a few left over patches from parts of the coastline. this forecast model clears it out completely. we could have a few left over patches. 8:00 this morning areas of fog 42-52 degrees. relatively clear skies well inland. by 12:00 still patchy coastal fog. and 3:00 mild to warm. there is the eventual temperature range and a few low 80s showing up. brentwood we will go to 80. san jose a forecast high of 76. and look at gilroy 80 degrees. look ahead your five-day forecast a little cooler for your thursday. no major changes with partly sunny skies by the weekend. time now 5:10. the fatal crash just hours ago south of petaluma has shut down one lane of highway 101.

tara moriarty is live near the marin-sonoma county border. you're there now so what happened? >> reporter: the coroner is on scene and they have taken pictures of the victim. they're trying to get an id on her. behind me you can see there is firefighters standing around. you can't see but there is a ditch there. and that is where the truck is. the woman's body was behind the wheel but they just removed it a couple minutes ago. firefighters will begin the task of trying to get the car out of the ditch. if we take a look at video shot earlier this morning. the chp says around 2:15 they received a 911 call from a passenger inside the truck who had been injured. we're just north of novato. south of petaluma along a very dangerous stretch of 101. the woman was driving northbound when she drifted into the center divide and officers say it looks like she over corrected and then ended up in the ditch.

>> it took our officers several minutes to find the vehicle as it was in an inconspicuous spot. when they did find the vehicle firefighters were responding. the driver was pronounced deceased at the scene. and three of the passengers were transported with major injuries. >> reporter: we are told that victim is 31 years old out of petaluma. the three passengers also in their 30s were in the car and received major injuries. two taken to santa marin memorial. firefighters and chp says this is the third fatal crash along 101. the crash is still under investigation. it's unknown whether the woman perhaps fell asleep at the wheel or if alcohol was a factor. right now one northbound lane is still shut down. we have been told it will be another ten minutes or so before they are able to get the truck out of the ditch and then they will reopen the roadway.

so 101 northbound will be open pretty soon. good news it's in the opposite direction of your morning commute. so definitely the southbound direction should not be impacted at all. live from the county line i'm tara moriarty. 5:12 is the time right few. a disturbing child endangerment case in california. it involves a toddler, drugs, and alcohol. also one volunteer firefighter got a surprising house call. the crash that woke him up as he sprang into action.

time now 5:15. a volunteer firefighter in new york quickly realized he would be fighting flames at his own house. this happened last night a truck crashed into the firefighters house, hitting a natural gas line that exploded. a woman and two children inside they escaped safely. the driver of that truck now facing several charges including driving while on drugs. back here at home state lawmakers and school superintendents from six school districts in california they are examing governor brown's new funding proposal. most of the participates praised the principals behind the governors school finance reforms. the plan gives more funding to schools that have a larger percentage of english learners

and low income. they are worried about not enough funding because of this formula. new legislation is being introduced in the senate today that would require public colleges and universities to give credit for online courses when the classes on campuses are full. if this measure passes it will be the first of its kind for public universities. students at california's public universities find it hard to complete their graduation requirements because those classes on campus are full. later today president obama sits down with ceo's from around the country to talk about a big security threat cyber attacks. as ktvu kyla campbell reports this topic is getting a lot of attention. kyla. >> reporter: pam, that is mainly because the penalty gone says the number of cyber attacks on u.s. companies is rising and fast. hackers are using the internet to break into computers and steal information. now the federal government wants to work more closely with the private sector to come up with a defense plan.

cyber attacks are a real problem when it comes to competing in the global economy. the pentagon says china is behind most of the cyber attacks. they are stealing information like private information. president obama is meeting with ceos to get their ideas on how the government can better work with the private sector to improve the countries cyber security. u.s. intelligence officials likened the chinese cyber threats to those coming from al qaeda and iran and it's expected to get worse in the next two years. >> we have seen the attacks on wall street over the last six months grow significantly. over 140 of those attacks. >> reporter: we know this morning the pentagon is creating a large team to defend the attacks. i also got in touch with my white house contact to find out if any bay area ceo's would be

at this afternoon's meeting. i'll have updates on both when i see you next hour. live in washington kyla campbell. a young couple in mendocino county is facing serious charges in a disturbing child endangerment case. police arrested 23-year-old samantha devalle and ray mobbed maybery on monday. the woman's toddler was taken to the hospital with a dangerous amount of drugs and alcohol in its system. new study says apples days of dominance in the tablet will end this year. id thief says apple ipad owned 50% of the market last year. that will drop to 46%. android devices are expected to surpass apple and make up 48% of the market.

time now 5:19 let's get sal back. we've got a lot of stuff to work with this morning. >> that is right. we do have that marin sonoma county crash. northbound 101. noncommute direction you have seen tara there. it's at the very fop of the screen. marin county not really effected by it unless you happen to be driving from novato to petaluma. still pretty early. the bigger news southbound 101 and some of the areas are going to be foggy when it comes to the morning commute. let's go to the bay bridge toll plaza. it will be thick fog here at the commute. be very careful as you drive to work. san francisco we had fog there bufo it looks pretty clear. at least right now. the fog tends to move around. so it could be possible that we won't be able to see this picture in awhile. it's 5:20. let's go to mark. hi there, sal. every picture you will have update. right now it's near the coast

and shooting out toward the bay bridge. current temperatures in the upper 30s to the lower 50s. oakland right now at 50 degrees. downtown san francisco 47. here we go with the fog hugging parts of shoreline. here's the biggest concern out toward the oakland airport. current visibility of one eighth of a mile. that translates to 660 feet. very low visibilities out toward the east bay and berkeley and richmond and albany. so it's floating around the bay. clear skies well inland and into the afternoon hours clearing with temperatures back up into the 60s and 70s and lower 80s. the other extreme we have still have an on shore breeze. the temperatures on the coast mainly in the lower 60s with the exception of santa cruz.

santa cruz warming back up. santa cruz yesterday 80 degrees the official high. fairfield 78. oakland dense fog this morning clearing this afternoon 73. forecast high 76 in san jose. and more neighborhoods san francisco downtown easily back up into the upper 60s, 67. here's a look ahead of your five-day forecast. no major changes. a few high clouds paid us a visit. no rain clouds on this graphic but maybe a few changes next week. coming up we'll take a look at the the long range forecast. european markets are slipping after a new report shows the united kingdom slipped back into a recession. that follows the trend starletting in ray -- starting in asia over night. china fell 1%. japan nikkei was also down. checking in on our numbers. futures do point to a lower opening across the board here in the u.s.. a little bit of a mixed picture as you can see yesterday with the dow starting at 14,450.

parachute that wouldn't deploy but he is alive to talk about it. he was testing a release with his stunt partner just outside of stockton on sunday when something went wrong. his shoot got tangled. he began spinning out of control. the whole incident caught on tape. he fell for three minutes before hitting the ground. >> i knew it was bad when i was living it and when i saw the video i'm like that is a lot worse than i thought. how did i walk away from that? how did i manage to survive? >> he landed on a pile of fresh dirt in a vinegar narrowly missing iron stakes. time now 5:26. sal has stories this morning in our compute. not real good either. >> no. we do have that fatal cash northbound 101. one lane is blocked. southbound lanes are open. out to the south bay we go.

northbound 280 the traffic here looks good. the fog is san issue for the morning -- is an issue for the morning commute. let's go to mark tamayo. as you mentioned the fog doing its thing near the coast and right into the bay out toward the bay bridge. oakland, berkeley, richmond. cloud clear back to the other shoreline. you can see temperatures do warm up nicely. inland spots in the upper 70s to 80 degrees later on today. downtown san francisco forecast high of 67. and a look ahead your five-day forecast you can see this. a little cooler for your thursday and friday. time now just about 5:27. still ahead the long wait almost over for you drivers on the san mateo county coast. when the devil slide tunnel will finally be open for business. we're live in san jose where san jose police are looking for two suspects they say are responsible for a brutal robbery that took place

morning. mark tamayo is in. you and i were talking about allergies. they are picking up with this weather. >> especially with the warmer temperatures. temperatures peaking for the week today. get ready for that. temperatures on track to reach the upper 70s to around 80 degrees. but that is after the fog this morning. dense fog will be right around the bay. into the afternoon hours it looks like a summertime weather pattern. lier 60s, 70 -- lower 60s, 70s some locations hitting the 80- degree mark. good morning, sal. good morning, mark. highway 4 westbound. it's a little crowded. it's interesting we've been talking about the fog. the fog massachusetts not reached highway 4 yet as you can see clearly. the morning commute has been marred by a fatal crash. a 31-year-old woman has died early this morning when the pickup truck she was driving veered off highway 101.

four people were in the pickup truck when it crashed around 2:15 a.m.. three passengers were taken to hospitals with major injuries. crews were working to get the woman's body from the pickup truck. i think the latest is they have done that. southbound 101 is not effected. you may slow at the scene as people take a look at the incident. let's go back to the desk. happening now in rome we are waiting for the next round of voting on who will be the next pope. at 3:40 this morning there was this. 3:40 pacific time black smoke coming from that chimney at the sistine chapel. that means none of the 115 cardinals received the two- thirds vote needed to become the new pope. now the ballots were burned together after two rounds of voting this morning. now just about five minutes from right now, we will take you live to roam, get a report on day two of the papal conclave. san jose police have

released photos of a man and woman suspected of violently stealing another woman's purse. janine de la vega joins us now from san jose with the pictures police hope will lead to an arrest. janine. >> reporter: the attack happened here on ray street which is not too far from the 280 ma radian exit. a woman was walking here on the sidewalk when she was beaten and robbed. police are hoping that you recognize two suspects they say are responsible. they say this young woman and a young man in their early 20s were working as a team when they targeted a woman who was riding the light rail on february 6th. just before 7:00 that night a female victim got off. police say the fell suspects followed her and punched her and kick the her until she fell to the ground. and then that female suspect tried to take her purse. the male suspect helped the female suspect snatch the victim's purse. both left the scene on

bicycles. those two ride the light rail station say they are shocked that this happened. >> i was surprised it happened here. it's a nice area. >> reporter: the female suspect is described as being latino, 5'6", weighing 190 pounds and has long dark wavy hair. the male suspect is a white or latino weighing 170 pounds. san jose police would like you to give them a call if you recognize either of those suspects or have information. coming up at 6:00 a.m. you will hear from the man who might recognize those two people you saw in the picture. a pleasant oven preschool is hoping to rebuild trust with parents after a teacher is accused of binding a two-year- old with masking tape. >> our preschool family, parents, everybody is highly

upset. there is a lot of anxiety over an incident like this. >> more than 100 parents attended a meeting at center point school last night. angela taped a child's wrist and ankle after she refused to take a nap. since then the preschool director six preschoolteachers and one other teacher have resigned. center point is working to revamp the program and reassure parents. another bay area teacher has been arrested for drugging her students. what she is accused of pour into the young children's cups coming up. san francisco district attorney says the cell phone industry does not want to disable cell phones that have been reported stolen and he wants to change that. district attorney says disabling the phones would make them less valuable to thieves. right now more than half the robberies in san francisco

involve cell phones that are stolen. district attorney gascon says it took more than a month to set up a meeting with cell phone carriers just to talk about the idea. there is a new report showing 80% of americans between the ages of 12 and 1 own a cell phone and almost half of them are smart phones. that is having a big effect how they get on the internet. 1-4 young people say they mostly get online using their phones. and half the young smart phone owners say it's their favorite way to use the internet. that compares to just 15% of adults who get on the internet mostly by cell phone. the long waits almost over for drivers on highway 1 on the san mateo county coast. cal tran announced highway 1 twin tunnels the devils slide will finally open march 25th. that is just 12 days from right now. this will be california's first highway tunnel in almost 50

years and it's great news for drivers that have been forced to use a very dangerous two lane road to get between pacifica and half-moon bay. happening right now still no pope after three rounds of voting. the 115 cardinals will pray and deliberate among themselves and hold another vote or two later today. reporter erin mclaughlin is in rome with a look at this morning's conclave. good morning, erin. >> reporter: good morning, pam. that is right. earlier this morning we saw that thick black smoke billowing once again from the iconic chimney atop the sistine chapel indicating to the world the first two rounds of ballots this morning did not yield a pope. currently the cardinals are taking a four hour break. they are eating lunch and no doubt praying and reflecting on the day's events. they then go back into the sistine chapel this evening for another two rounds of ballots.

by the end of the day if still no pope we will see thick black smoke from that chimney. the cardinals will make their way back to the hotel they are staying at in the vatican. and no doubt eat dinner and chatting among themselves about the candidates and the process. interesting little nugget for you a vatican spokesperson telling us the pope aimer dishas been watching the events unfold. he was watching the as first signs of black smoke emanated from the sistine chapel. >> have you been able to talk to we understand thousands of people out there even though the weather is very cold. have you been able to talk to anyone? are there people there for however long it takes?

could be also foggy on the bridge getting into san francisco. but once you get to san francisco there is not a lot of fog here on 101 at the 80 split. traffic does look good approaching the 80 split. also this morning we're looking at the drive northbound 101 in novato. we have a crash at the marin- sonoma county line. i want to move the maps down to the peninsula here where we have decent conditions on 101 between burling game and redwood city. let's go to mark tamayo. hi there, sal, good morning to you. fog continues. dense patches near the coast. extepiding to the golden -- extending to the goldthey are ranging from the upper 30s out toward napa to lots of 40s. warmest locations about 50- degrees in san jose and antioch currently cheque in 51. what is happening we have a layer of warm air up above us. as it program com presses that fog bank closer to the surface.

as a result we have the dense fog. this was a factor coast side today and still a factor this morning. oakland airport one eighth of a mile visibility. san jose in the clear. livermore, antioch. a lot of clear spots as well. closer to the coast and bay you will encounter patchy dense fog. partly cloudy for the coast. we could have a few left over patches near parts of the shoreline this ash. around the bay we will clear things out and warm up the temperatures. look at this, 77-80 degrees this afternoon by abouting the 2:00 or 3:00. today one of the warmest days of the week. you can see upper 70s. san jose 76 and downtown san francisco upper 60s. watch out for the thick fog this morning. clearing out by this afternoon.

morning near the coast and bay. but inland this afternoon aprepping the 80-degree mark. welcome back. good morning, to you. here's a quick look at some of the top stories we are following for you at 5:44. extra security at foothill high school in pleasanton. families were alerted by the principal yesterday. someone wrote a threatening message in the girl's bathroom. the threats said and i'm quoting everyone on campus would be shot. also just a little while ago in fact just minutes ago a northbound lane of highway 101 reopened. it was closed early this morning because of a fatal crash right near the marin- sonoma county line. a tow truck just finished removing the pickup truck. in that crash a woman was killed, three men were hurt in that early morning crash. and in rome we are still waiting for the election of a new pope. black smoke came out of the chimney of the sistine chapel a little more than two hours ago. another round or two of voting on who will be the new pope

will take place later today. a group of surfers is going back to court to try to regain access to a popular san mateo beach. the case involves martin's beach. the beach was sold several years ago and since then the new owner has blocked the public from using the private road to the beach. the suit claims that gated road is in violation of the state's coastal act. a recent ktvu news report on head injuries is leading to action. sources tell us that our report has persuaded the nfl to consider a genetic test for players. they broke the story last month of a cheek swab test that shows genetic bio markers for brain damage after a concussion. the test was created by marin county physician and former 49er line backer james kovach.

good on 101. some of the fog will be around obviously on the coast. so right now though highway 1 looks good as you drive from half-moon bay to pacifica. we're taking a look at the fog and some of the cold numbers stepping outside the door this morning. not too cold but a few upper 30s. as you can see out toward antioch and napa and novato. san jose 50. downtown san francisco 47. as far as the fog we have been tracking it all morning long and dense patches near the coast. up toward santa rosa. three quarter os ever a mile. really targeting as it shoots on to the golden gate bridge out toward berkeley and richmond and albany. and visibilities down to one eighth of a mile. gives you an idea of how much fog you are dealing with. well inland out toward concord and livermore. high pressure in full command of our weather. the storm track heads way up to the north and the high basically forcing air down.

good wednesday morning. time now 5:54. watch out for fog near the coast and parts of the bay. but a nice warmup this afternoon. warmest locations 80 degrees. welcome back. time now 5:54. in illinois an unexpected ending to golf. a sink hole opened up on the golf course and the golfer fell in there. mike was playing a round of golf with his buddies on friday. he tested out a strange depression on the course. then he fell 18 feet down. dislocating his shoulder. one of his friends actually jumped into the sink hole to help him climb out using a rope and ladder. >> maybe we should of waited for the first but i didn't think we had a choice. i think we wanted to get him

out of there because of the uncertainty of a sink hole. >> he was taken to a hospital for treatment. the golf course they are trying to fill up that sink hole. back here at home the america's cup race no longer expected to give the bay area's economy a $1.5 billion boost. an updated economic report will be presented to the city supervisors. now it's estimating it will generate $900 million for the city's economy. that is down a lot from the original $1.4 billion estimate. the same report shows it will cost the city a lot less to host the sailing event. pleasanton police are searching for a bank robber. it happened just after 11:00 tuesday morning at the wells fargo. the man approached a teller with a note saying he's robbing the bank and ran away with the cash. he's described as african american between 30 and 40 years old standing between 5'10", six feet tall with black hair, brown eyes and a goatee.
